California Coast Clifftop Elopement // Big Sur Elopement Photographer

Scott & Chandler's Big Sur Elopement

This spring we photographed Scott and Chandler’s adventure elopement on California’s gorgeous Big Sur coastline. We had a great time getting to know them; they are such beautiful and joyful people! We loved that they made the day exactly what they wanted it to be: fun, laid-back, and adventurous. We showed up at their hillside Airbnb rental as they were getting ready together. It was a beautiful thing to see them helping each other prepare for the rest of the day. Before leaving for the ceremony they did Face-time calls with family back home. Squeals of delight and words of encouragement came from the other end of the line as they saw Scott and Chandler all dressed up.

A quick drive down the coast and we arrived at Garrapata State Park for their elopement ceremony. Along with the officiant, we ventured out among wildflowers to the edge of a cliff where they said their vows and were pronounced husband and wife. Then we made our way down to the beach and they read emotional letters they had written for each other and popped some champagne. After playing on the beach for a little while we made our way to one more beautiful cliffside. Scott and Chandler cuddled up watching the waves crash along the shoreline as we took a few more photos before the sun had completely set.

We asked Chandler to share her thoughts on forgoing the traditional wedding for an adventurous elopement, and this is what she had to say:

“Before Scott and I got engaged, we frequently discussed our ideas of what the perfect wedding would be like for each of us. Scott and I love to travel; we've traversed mountains in Canada, breathed in the fresh forest air in Tennessee, and braved the crazy altitudes in Colorado. We are so thankful that we have been fortunate enough to travel whenever we want to; I take care of leukemia patients who rarely get to leave the hospital once they're diagnosed. It's a tough battle to witness, but they are so strong. They have shown me how to truly make the most of life and to appreciate every opportunity that I am given to do something that makes me happy. Being with each other and getting outside are two things that make Scott and me really happy (haha). At the end of the day, that's what really matters about your wedding day... spending that time really bonding and enjoying the special moments you won't get again are part of what makes eloping so great! I will say that once we were engaged, Scott and I thought about just going to the courthouse to become husband and wife as quickly as we could! However, we started thinking about all of the people who can't go and see this beautiful world we have... and we are always down for a big adventure. Why not make our wedding day an adventure too?

Traditional weddings are awesome, but Scott and I wanted to spend that day doing things we love together. On our wedding day, we had a big breakfast, hiked, and spent quality time together getting ready. Doing that was so intimate and special; a time I know that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I think eloping always made sense to us because we didn't want the craziness of a large wedding in a typical venue. We just wanted to be with each other and with nature, where we feel most at home.

Big Sur has a special place in Scott's heart; his grandparents met there and got married shortly after. We had never been, but we always wanted to go. So we decided on a whim to get married there, and everyone we met along the way made the experience so incredible! Especially Colby and Jess. We are forever grateful for all of their hard work, dedication, and advice. They were there for us from the very beginning, and this camera-shy couple feel totally comfortable and at ease! The way they captured our wedding day is amazing, and the pictures show it. So glad I stumbled upon them :)”

Casie & Shayne's romantic elopement in Southern Iceland

We couldn't have imaged a better way to end 2017. Christmas was spent exchanging gifts of books and chocolates (an Icelandic tradition) in a cozy apartment in Reykjavik after photographing Casie and Shayne's Iceland adventure elopement and exploring southern Iceland with them. They chose to have their elopement ceremony, just the two of them, in Hvalsneskirkja Church in Sandgerdi, the western part of Reykjanes Peninsula. The church was built in 1887 with carved basalt stone exterior walls and driftwood from the nearby shore was used for the interior. The ceremony was an amazingly unique experience with the priest performing parts of it in Icelandic.

After the ceremony we made our way down the coast of Reykjanes Peninsula where we climbed around on giant black rocks watching the strong waves crash against the cliffs. At that time of year Iceland was only getting about 4 hours of daylight so we quickly ran out of light and met up the next day to continue the adventure. Starting with snuggles under the massive waterfall, Skogafoss, then making our way east we stopped off to explore Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon along the way. At our final destination Shayne and Casie shared their first dance as husband and wife on a black sand beach with the slow sunset glowing on jagged snowy mountains towering behind them.

Taft Point Engagement Adventure Session at Sunset // Yosemite National Park Wedding Photographers

Edwin & Marissa's Adventurous Taft Point Engagement Session in Yosemite National Park, California

One of the coolest parts of our job is getting to meet people from all over the place that share our love of traveling and the outdoors. Marissa and Edwin are some of those people. They're currently living in Austin, TX but were totally up for traveling half way across the states to Yosemite National Park in California for their engagement photos. Their adventure session began during sunrise at Glacier Point.  Since we all arrived late the night before and didn't get quite enough sleep we took a break to rest before meeting up again in the afternoon. Making our way up to Taft Point to catch sun set we found ourselves stopping in the Valley, in a meadow, and up on a high ledge taking photos. Yosemite has a seemingly endless supply of beautiful locations for engagement sessions. During the drive we bonded over our love of tacos and chatted about our favorite foods we had tried from different places in the US (I guess we were all a bit hungry by that time!). The hike out to Taft Point was a fun challenge. Snow covered the trail in spots which sent us off the path trying to find easier passage then trying to reconnect to the trail again. We took our time making stops here and there when the giant pines were just too beautiful to pass by without photographing.

As the sun set Edwin and Marissa conquered any fear of heights they might have had by making their way out to the ledge to snuggle while we took photos from a distance. After enjoying the sunset we made our way back to our cars from Taft Point using headlamps and cell phone flashlights while trying to remember which way we detoured from the snow on our way up. A couple wrong turns and more than a few laughs later we were back to our car.
